Sarai Sierra was killed from a fatal blow to the head that horribly disfigured her face, and found in a seedy area of Istanbul last Saturday after failing to show up for a Jan. 21 flight home to New York. She was found wearing only underwear and a shirt, but an autopsy showed no signs of sexual assault. Her gold jewelry was still on her body but her cell phone and iPad were missing.

The married woman, and mother of two, was murdered while on a solo trip to Turkey and reportedly had sex the day before she disappeared with a man she met on the internet. Taylan K had been in online communication with 33-year-old Sarai Sierra weeks before her trip, but initially he insisted they were just friends. A source familiar with the investigation told FoxNews.com that Sierra had contacted “amateur tour guides” online in advance of her trip. Taylan was among the individuals whom she had communicated with, and the two were known to have met on Jan. 13, according to multiple Turkish media accounts.

Taylan told police they had a sexual relationship, top prosecutor Huseyin Kaplan said Thursday. He added that he sent her a message on the day she vanished and asked her to meet, but she never responded.

Police say the man, identified as Taylan K, is being interviewed by the police and subjected to DNA and blood tests as police search for clues into Sierra’s death. They include people who she met via Instagram and homeless people who are known to congregate near the ancient city walls where her body was found Feb. 2, Kaplan said.

“We’re not interested in whether she had a sexual relationship,” Kaplan told the Daily News. “What’s important for us is who killed her.”

“God willing, the murderer is one of them, but right now we’re not narrowing our focus to any of these people,” Kaplan said.

A worker who viewed Sierra’s body before it was taken to the airport told The News on Wednesday that she had severe bruises on her legs and scratches on her wrists. The disturbing new details are the latest evidence that the 5-foot-2 Sierra fought to live.

“Only someone like an animal could do this,” he said.

Sierra’s brother, David Jimenez, returned to her Staten Island home Wednesday night, and her husband, Steven Sierra, also went back after both spent days searching for her in Istanbul.

Sierra went to a three-week trip to Istanbul to pursue her passion for photography, she took the trip alone after a childhood friend, Magalena Rodriguez, backed out. At a news conference in New York, Ms Rodriguez fought back tears as she said she wished she had not changed her plans. Sarai Sierra had been in regular contact with her family on Staten Island.

The forensic results are expected within two months. Meanwhile, Sierra’s family is said to be making funeral arrangements as her body is flown back to New York from Turkey.

In an interview on NBC’s Today show, the victim’s mother said the family has not yet told Ms Sierra’s two children, aged nine and 11, of their mother’s death.

“The father’s going to talk to them when he gets back and we’ll all be there to support,” Betzaida Jimenez said.
