In spite of the hard reviews from the critics “Taken 2” tops box office with 50 million over the opening weekend. Critics don’t seem to have enjoyed the sequel sayin that it’s considered a copy of the original; but Leam Neeson’s delivery doubled the popularity of the original movie. Taken 2 hands down dominated the competition over the weekend!
The first Taken movie, also with Neeson in the stellar role debuted to 24.7 million in early 2009 only half of this thriller’s sequel! I don’t know what to tell you here, in my opinion this movie was great; and more if like me, you watched it along your dad’s side it just makes you want to hug him and say thank you for always being my hero! It’s just awesome from start to finish! Action, bad ass dad, corruption, innocent daughter, clueless friend, worried mom and stepdad with money…Ok, I’m not a movie critic but I like my happy endings! Well in the end thanks to great word-of-mouth, Taken chugged all the way to 145 million total.
The sequel might not be an academy award winning movie for some! But the fact that 60-year-old Neeson is at the peak of his career and opening a new action tent pole every couple of months, is nothing short of remarkable. If you saw the first one you just need to see this one and have your own opinion.
Neeson comes back as a retire CIA agent who makes a great use of his set of “special skills” against a band of kidnappers who are seeking revenge.
Some believe thanks to the upfront excitement Taken 2 will almost certainly fall hard in the weeks to come, but considering Fox spent just $42 million to make the film, that won’t really matter now right!
Now this is how the box office ended up this past weekend:
1. Taken 2 — $50.0 million
2. Hotel Transylvania — $26.3 million
3. Pitch Perfect — $14.7 million
4. Looper — $12.2 million
5. Frankenweenie — $11.5 miilion
