Yesterday the tragic news about Maria Santos Gorrostieta’s murdered was revealed by news all over the world, she was mayor at Tiquicheo, Michoacan qand survived two assassination attempts by Mexican drug lords cartels loosing her first husband in one of those, Gorrostieta was killed during a third attack leaving behind three small children, her second husband Nereo Patiño Delgado Patinoran who is missing.
36-year-old Maria Santos Gorrostieta was dubbed the Heroine of the 21st Century, survived two assassination attempts by the hands of Mexican drug cartels, the first attack came on October, 2009 when she and her husband were riding in their car in El Limone and got attacked by an armed gang, her husband José Sánchez Chávez died in the fusillade, less than a year after he had escaped a showdown with armed men on January.
Three months later when she was driving to a meeting her car was ambushed in the road between Guerrero and Michoacan, Mrs. Gorrostieta was hit by three bullets from the 30 bullets fired by the assault rifles that also injured her brother Benigno and a reporter.
Maria Santos got married to her second husband Nereo Delgado Patinoran, they were living together in Morelia with her three children.
Maria was driving her youngest daughter to school when a car blocked her pass, she was pulled out from the car, she was beaten in front of her little daughter, she begged them to spare her girl’s life and got inside their car voluntarily; five days later her body was found.
Mrs. Gorrostieta’s husband Nereo disappeared the same day she was abducted and is still missing.
Maria and Nereo Patiño Delgado Patinoran met after the second assassination attempt she suffered on 2010, he was one of the men assigned to protect her. Nereo Patino Delgado got married to the former Mayor last September, they split up months later, sources said that two week before her murder Maria and her husband had a heated argument.
Nereo described as director de Desarrollo Rural secretario de ayuntamiento or and town clerk (director of Rural Development in Michoacan where Maria was mayor), some media reported that Nereo was with Gorrostieta by the time she was kidnapped, others said he is missing and is unknown if he is dead or alive, but this site here reported the PGJE (Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado) have send a citation to Nereo Patiño Delgado about his wife’s murder.
Maria was born on March 5, 1975 to a poor family that had so little money that by the time she was 13 she left her studies to working a bar, it was on her way home from work that she met a 30-year-old man Jose Sanchez her first husband, it was rumored he made his fortune by trafficking marijuana.
Jose and Maria got married and she asked him to pay her for her studies, she graduated from the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, Maria was a respected gynecologist and obstetrician that had to endure the fact that her husband cheated on her, continued to sell drugs.
She gave birth to three gorgeous children, that became the center of her life. By the time she was 32, her husband and his brother Gustavo Sánchez Chávez former Mayor in Tiquicheo agreed that she would be a better candidate to Mayor now that a second drug cartel threatened the town’s economy.
Jose and his brother were respected and feared in Tiquicheo, they became wealthy men but the harmony in the family ended over each other wealth, at the end Jose changed his will and named his wife the whole owner of everything he owned.
