Maria Santos Gorrostieta Salazar is a 36 years old dead heroine. She was the true Cinderella who started as a maid and made her way to become the mayor of her city.
She was found dead Thursday morning in a vacant property in Cuitzeo county. Michoacan, is controlled by criminals. They need to add Maria along with Maricela Escobedo to that list of Heroines of Mexico. Both of these women brought the attention to the dysfunctional justice system and knew the risks they faced and didn’t cower.
With a great courage she stood up to the drugs gangs. It was sure she would eventually pay for her bravery with her life. She was stabbed, burned, battered and bound at wrist and ankle and found dumped by a roadside.
Her second husband Nereo Delgado Patinoran, is still missing.
She met her Prince Charming in her village. He made her his wife, educated her and became a doctor. Later, she started in politics and had the first attack, back in ‘09. This time, she ordered her husband’s bodyguards to go to a place in a valley and he remained alone. She had a meeting in town, but never saw each other in the meeting point. A murderer shot the couple’s car and killed her husband. She survived. A helicopter came to pick her up in less than 10 minutes. She was injured but was safe.
After the first attack, she quit from PRI and enrolled in PRD.
She said this:
And I will stand up all the times God allows me to, so I will continue looking for, scratching, making plans, projects and actions in benefit of all society, but mostly for the unprotected ones.
She was conscious of people’s inner pain:
Few times understood by people around us, because simply haven’t struggled or are unconscious towards the pain of others.
She couldn’t quit to be a mayor because:
It is not possible today, I have 3 children, that I have to educate with my example, and keep the memory of dead husband and father of my kids, he who knew how to teach me the value of things and fight for them.
And though he is no longer with us, he is still the light that guides my decisions, enough said that each one of them is for the city improvement.

María was born on 1976 and died this year. She was a Mexican politician, doctor, ex-mayor of Tiquicheo de Nicolás Romero, Michoacán. She studied in Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo. She governed between 2008-2011 in Tiquicheo de Nicolás Romero. This is located in Tierra Caliente where ‘Caballeros Templarios’ and ‘Familia Michoacana’ control everything. She was attacked twice and was severely wounded, in the first aggression, her husband, José Sánchez Chávez, died. She was assassinated this month when she finished her period in the City Hall. She had 3 children.
